Aryna Sabalenka Crashes Out of US Open in Upset

2nd seed Aryna Sabalenka suffered a shock defeat in the third round of the US Open on Tuesday, losing 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to Russian qualifier Varvara Gracheva.

Sabalenka, who was the runner-up at Wimbledon this year, was the heavy favorite coming into the match, but she was outplayed by Gracheva, who is ranked 80th in the world.

Gracheva broke Sabalenka's serve five times in the match and saved all three break points she faced. She also hit 24 winners to Sabalenka's 15.

"I'm really happy with the way I played today," Gracheva said. "I was able to stay aggressive and take my chances. Aryna is a great player, so I'm really proud of this win."

Sabalenka's defeat is a major upset and it leaves the women's draw wide open. Gracheva will now face 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the fourth round.
