Chelsea Secure Advantage In Conference League Play Off Opener

Chelsea Secure Advantage in Conference League Play-Off opener

2-0 victory over Servette puts Blues in commanding position

Goals from Nkunku and Madueke give Chelsea the edge

Chelsea took a significant step towards the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Swiss side Servette in the first leg of their play-off tie.

The Blues weathered an early storm from the hosts before taking control of the game and eventually breaking the deadlock through Christopher Nkunku's penalty in the second half.

Substitute Noni Madueke added a second late on to give Chelsea a commanding lead heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

Nkunku breaks the deadlock

Chelsea had to be patient in breaking down a resolute Servette defense, but they eventually found their breakthrough just before the hour mark.

Nkunku was brought down in the area by defender Yoan Severin, and the referee pointed to the spot.

The French forward made no mistake from 12 yards, sending Servette goalkeeper Joël Kiassumbua the wrong way.

Madueke makes it two

Chelsea doubled their lead in the 85th minute through Madueke, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes.

The winger latched onto a through ball from Kai Havertz and calmly slotted the ball past Kiassumbua from close range.

The goal all but sealed the victory for Chelsea, who will now be confident of progressing to the group stage.

What's next?

The second leg of the tie will be played at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, September 5.

Chelsea will be looking to finish the job and secure their place in the group stage, while Servette will need to produce a remarkable comeback to overturn the deficit.
